the hair journalFrizz and humidity

Humid days and frizzy hair often arrive together on the coast. Here is why it happens and the small changes that help your hair stay smoother.

Beating humidity frizz in Yeppoon

If you live in Yeppoon, you know the feeling. You leave the house with smooth hair, and by the time you have walked down James Street it has doubled in size. Humidity frizz is one of the most common things our clients ask about, and the good news is there is a lot you can do.

Why humidity causes frizz

Hair naturally takes in moisture from the air. When hair is dry or damaged, the outer layer, called the cuticle, is more raised. On humid days, that hair absorbs extra moisture from the air, swells unevenly and loses its smooth shape. That is frizz.

So the aim is not to dry your hair out. It is to keep it well moisturised and protected, so it has less reason to reach for moisture in the air.

Start in the shower

  • Choose a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo that does not strip your hair.
  • Use conditioner every time you wash, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Rinse with cool or lukewarm water rather than hot.
  • The Moroccanoil Frizz Control range is made for exactly this kind of weather.

If you have hard or bore water at home, mineral build-up can leave hair rough and harder to smooth. A Filtered Beauty shower filter is worth considering.

Dry it the gentle way

  • Blot your hair with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt rather than rubbing.
  • Detangle from the ends up with a Wet Brush.
  • Always apply a heat protectant such as Moroccanoil Perfect Defense before blow-drying or straightening.
  • Point the dryer nozzle down the hair shaft to help the cuticle lie flat.

Seal it in

Once your hair is styled, a finishing product helps keep the humidity out. Color Wow Dream Coat is a popular choice for smooth blow-dries on humid days. A small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment or Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil on the ends adds shine and softness.

If you have curls or waves

Natural texture can be more prone to frizz, but fighting it is not the only option. Working with your curls often gives a better result. Apply a curl cream like Lohy Cruise Control Curl Cream to soaking wet hair, scrunch, and then air dry or diffuse on low. Try not to touch your curls while they dry.

Look after the health of your hair

Damaged hair tends to frizz more. Regular trims, a weekly treatment such as Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector, and an in-salon bond-building or hydration treatment can all help your hair feel smoother and more manageable over time.

Small habits that help

  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.
  • Keep your hands out of your hair through the day.
  • Carry a little finishing oil or cream for touch-ups.
