the hair journalBlonde care

Sun, pools and hard water can all take the shine off a fresh blonde. These simple at-home habits help keep your colour bright and your hair soft.

Keeping blonde bright between salon visits

There is nothing quite like walking out of the salon with fresh, bright blonde. Keeping it that way on the Capricorn Coast takes a little care, because sun, salt, chlorine and hard water can all affect your tone. Here is what we tell our blonde clients.

Why blonde changes colour

Most blonde hair has natural warm pigments underneath. Over time, as toner fades, those warmer tones can show through as brassiness or yellowness. Minerals in hard or bore water, chlorine from the pool and time in the sun can all speed this up or leave blonde looking dull.

Lightened hair is also more porous, which means it can lose moisture quickly and pick up whatever it is exposed to.

Use purple shampoo, but not every day

Purple shampoo adds a little violet tone back into the hair to soften yellow tones. Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo is our go-to. Use it once or twice a week, and use a gentle, colour-safe shampoo the rest of the time.

Start with a short time on the hair and adjust from there. If your blonde starts to look dull or slightly lilac, use it less often.

Keep your hair strong and hydrated

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, such as Olaplex No. 4 and No. 5 or Moroccanoil Color Care.
  • Add a weekly treatment. Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is designed for at-home use between salon visits.
  • Finish with a little Moroccanoil Treatment or Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil through the ends.
  • Rinse in cool water and wash a little less often if you can.

Protect it from the coast

  • Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and apply Coastal Grl Pre-Swim, a saltwater and chlorine protectant.
  • After swimming, rinse straight away and condition.
  • In the sun, wear a hat on long days outdoors.
  • At home, if you have hard or bore water, a Filtered Beauty shower filter can help reduce the mineral build-up that dulls blonde.

Go easy on the heat

High heat can fade toner and leave lightened hair dry. Keep your tools on a moderate setting and always use a heat protectant like Moroccanoil Perfect Defense first.

Keep your toning appointments

Even with the best home care, toner naturally fades over time. A quick toning or gloss appointment between full colour visits is an easy way to refresh your blonde. We can also add an in-salon bond-building treatment to help keep your hair feeling healthy. Your stylist will suggest timing that suits your hair and your colour.

The short version

Purple shampoo once or twice a week, a weekly treatment, protect before you swim, filter your shower water and keep the heat down.
